A Detour is a choice between two tasks, each with its won pro's and con's. In this Detour teams have to choose between two underground dwellings common to the everyday citizens of Guanajuato. The choice: Mines or Tunnels.
In Mines, teams make their way by Taxi to the La Valenciana Mine. Once there, they'll have to help clean and polish one kilogram of silver and then weigh enough silver to achieve a value of $3,000 MXN. Once they have done this, teams will receive their next clue.
Task Type: Mental
To choose this task post: **Taxi to the Mine** (+20 minutes -$50)
(Score: +30 minutes +Ranking +Accuracy)
Instructions: Answer the following questions by PM, you will be scored based on accuracy.
1. Complete the following properties of Silver (don't forget to include units) a) Standard atomic weight b) Density c) Melting point d) Thermal conductivity
2. Name 3 silver compounds, their chemical formula and their commercial use.
3. Using www.kitco.com/market/us_charts.html and www.xe.com, how much silver (in grams) is there in $3000 MXN? Use the first site to obtain the value of silver in USD and the second one to convert from USD to MXN. PM me a screenshot of both values along with your results.
In Tunnels, teams will make their way by foot to Porfirio Díaz Park. Once there, they will grab each one marked bike and ride the whole length of the Hidalgo Tunnel and back, counting the number of arches along the way. Once back at the park, they must write how many arches they counted, if they are right, they'll receive their next clue. If they are wrong, they'll have to count again.
Task Type: Physical
(Score: +20 minutes +Ranking +Accuracy) To choose this task post: **Run to the Park** (+10 minutes)
Instructions: Answer the following questions by PM, you may only submit once. A wrong or missing answer will incur a penalty. 1. How long is the Miguel Hidalgo Tunnel (in km)? 2. How many arches does it have? 3. PM me a map marking your route from the park through the tunnel and back.
If you decide to switch tasks post: *Taxi to Park/Mine* (+20 -$50)Notes: The currency used in Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN). To convert money post *Go to exchange office* (+20 minutes) and use the rates in either www.xe.com or www.google.com

Blake: Detour! Mines or Tunnels? Derek: *wrinkles nose* They sound about the same. Blake: I cannot believe you just said that, Derek: *sticks tongue out sheepishly* Oh, right, right, right... Sorry. So, polish silver or count arches? Polishing sounds like a bitch, and we're good at math.. Blake: Put it this way though - if we miscount, we gotta do it all over again. We're muscleheads, we can power through the silver detour. Derek: Sounds fair enough to me. Let's hurry then!
