Sailboats are now bringing the teams to the starting line, at the Villa Vizcaya Park and Museum.
And the twelve teams are...
MARIE and BIJOU, Models and ShopaholicsMarie Klaire: We are Marie Klaire and Bijou Birgitta.
Bijou Birgitta: And we're here because my mum forced me, and because she wanted.
Marie Klaire: I have a very convincing voice.
Bijou Birgitta: When mum told me about it, she had already prepared me my bag, and I was like: "Uhmmmm... WHERE THE HELL IS MY VERSACE?

Marie Klaire: She's a bit possessive... and she loves brands, no matter how much she has to pay for them.

ADRIANNA and AKBAR, Cousins
Adrianna: I'm Adrianna!
Akbar: And I'm Akbar.
Adrianna: We first met each other when I was 6 years old.
Akbar: I was adopted from Turkmenistan when I was still a baby. I kind of felt like I was strange because everyone else looked different then me. But when I met my cousin for the first time, she was my first real friend, and we had a really strong friendship.
Adrianna: We had so much fun together! But, since we didn't live close enough to see each other, we only got to see each other for short periods of time every few years or so.
Akbar: We are running the race to compete and win, for sure. But we're also here to have a good time with each other for a longer time than just a week.
Adrianna: I think we have great similarities to each other, and hopefully we can rekindle the bond we had when we were younger.
Akbar: Some of my skills include being able to make quick decisions when needed, a strong sense of navigation, and attention to detail. I think the qualities I have are among the most important ones needed to do well in the race.
Adrianna: Agreed! And as for me, I am good with arts and crafts of many kinds, am methodical, and patient. He doesn't seem to be very patient sometimes, so at a task that takes skill and patience, I will do it, but if it takes quick thinking or physical strength, he says he wants to handle it.
Akbar: Whatever it takes, we are ready to win the race!
Adrianna: And hopefully get to know each other better in the process. ;D
ISAMU and RETSU, Grandfather and GrandsonRetsu: We're Isamu and Retsu, from Austin, Texas.
Isamu: Retsu is of my grandchildren, the one I know best. He's so far the only one to have received a black belt in Karate.
Retsu: Grandpa is a really big force to reckon with. He's managed the dojo for almost 50 years and he's still on his prime.
Isamu: Definitely, age will not be a factor. I can still outrun most of my students and I still have more things to teach to America about the elderly..
Retsu: The other teams will most probably see us as a weaker team, but we'll show them otherwise.
Isamu: I know what Retsu is capable of by himself, but I really wanted to see how well we can work as a team.
Retsu: He's been my sensei since I was 4 and has taught me a lot of valuable lessons. However, I think we've missed some normal grandfather/grandchild interactions.
Isamu: I think I chose to do this race with Retsu to get to know him better as a person. But I'd like to learn if he could become a leader. I'd like him to take over the dojo for me.

Andy: I recently completed a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in International Studies so I have a good grasp of the customs of many countries around the world.
Paul: I also just completed a Bachelor of Arts however I majored in Spanish and I believe this will give us a major advantage if the race takes us to South America!

Andy: But 3 years ago after nearly 7 years of not seeing each other, we coincidentally became roomies!
